Rural Broadband: 21st Century Economic Development Using Old School Methods
Wednesday, August 30, 2023
12:30-1:30 p.m. ET
Utilizing Local, State, Federal & Private funding to fill in the gaps is the target. Achieving that target while navigating the rules of local, state, federal and even private contributions can be just as challenging before a foot of fiber is installed. Taking past public/private partnership successes as a guide, here in the Ames MSA we are filling in hundreds of square miles of rural areas across both Story County and Boone County in Iowa that is as essential anymore to residents and businesses as water, sewer, and electrical power in the 21st century.
Presenter:
Greg Piklapp
Director of Economic Development Outreach & Government Relations
Ames Chamber & Economic Development Commission
The Ames Chamber works in economic development across a two-county region in Iowa commonly called the Ames MSA (Metropolitan Statistical Area) covering both urban and rural communities.
Prior to joining the Ames Chamber/EDC, Greg served as a city councilmember in his hometown and chaired the city economic development committee for twelve years. In that position, he oversaw city investment in housing, downtown revitalization, emergency services and business expansions to name a few. During his public service Greg also served on the Iowa League of Cities Executive Board, numerous local and state board positions and helped co-found the Mid-Iowa Planning Alliance even during the depths of COVID.
Greg is an active community volunteer, serves in leadership at his church and currently a Story County Housing Trust Board member. A native of Boone, Iowa where he still resides today, he is a graduate of both Des Moines Area Community College and the University of Northern Iowa and a CEMO (Certified Elected Municipal Official) graduate of the Iowa League of Cities.
